Fencing Sword Practice Tip (Button Tip or Non-Electric)
The practice tip (also known as a mechanical tip or "button" tip) is the safety end piece placed on the tip of a conventional or training fencing sword. Unlike competition versions, this tip contains no electrical components or wires; its sole purpose is to absorb the mechanical impact of the thrust, protect the fencers' physical integrity, and prevent the steel blade from piercing the training jacket.
Description of Main Components
Being a purely mechanical and simplified mechanism, it consists of three basic parts:
-
1. The Practice Barrel:
A metal cylinder (usually steel or brass) that screws directly onto the threaded tip of the blade. Unlike the electric barrel, its base is completely blind or solid, as it does not need to house bronze contacts or electrical wires.
-
2. The Plastic or Metal Button:
This is the moving piston that cushions the blow. In most common training models, the outer head is usually covered by a rubber or rigid plastic cap to soften the impact on the partner's body, eliminating any sharp edges.
-
3. The Internal Spring:
A helical steel spring placed inside the barrel. Its only function is to offer elastic resistance at the moment of the thrust and immediately return the button to its extended position.
🔩 Safety note: As with electric weapons, the button is held in place by small side screws or by a system of riveted tabs (in inexpensive fixed tips) to prevent the spring from ejecting the tip head during combat.
Types of Practice Sword Tips
Depending on the training level and blade type, there are two main variants:
-
Dynamic Fixed Tip (Mechanical): Mimics the "click" and physical depression of a real electric sword, helping the beginner fencer get used to the pressure sensation required for a correct touch, but without registering lights.
-
Fixed Plastic Tip (Direct cap): In very basic beginner or school blades, a metal barrel is not used; instead, the blunt tip of the blade is covered directly with a pressure-fit rubber stopper or cap (mushroom style).
Advantages in Training
-
Low Cost: They are considerably cheaper than electric tips and do not require the use of sword wires or glue in the blade groove.
-
Minimal Maintenance: Since there are no circuits, they do not suffer from oxidation problems on contacts, sweat, or broken wire failures. You only need to periodically check that the button is not loose.
-
Greater Durability: Designed to withstand the rough daily treatment of fencing classes and practice bouts without the delicacy required by a tournament weapon.
